Into the Abyss (Apostle Islands-somewhere between Sand and
York Island)
28Aug05: I'll be adding
more pictures when I can. Yeah, it's over 2 years later but better late
then never.. ;)
Monika and I planned a kayaking trip in
mid-September to the Apostle Islands located in Lake Superior above Bayfield,
WI. We invited her brother Chris since he had some free time and hey; we
like the kid!!!! He drove up from Westmont to our place in St. Louis Park,
MN (suburb of Minneapolis). From there, it was just a 5 hour drive to Red
Cliff, MN which is just a couple miles drive from the Apostle Islands National
Lakeshore Ranger Station where we would be launching from.
We spent the first night camping at Red Cliff so
we'd get enough rest for morning paddle. And wouldn't you know it; there
happen to be a casino across the street from the campground. So, we
decided to have a little R&R and Chris and I actually made some money...poor
Monika.
Our trip consisted of 4 days/3 three nights and
would include paddling out(6mi) and camping at primitive a site on the mainland,
hitting Sand Island(4.5mi), York Island(4mi) and then back to the main dock(4mi)
on the mainland. Including the time spent checking out sea caves on the
mainland over on the west side of the land; we paddled a total of about 22
miles.
Day 1&2:
We set the truck with the boats - doesn't it look
cool with 3 boats on top?!? - and made our way to Red Cliff, WI. After a
nights rest, we loaded the boats up and made the ~6mile trip to our campsite
west of Sand Point on the mainland. After setting up camp, we made our way
west along the shoreline to check out the sea caves located about 3 miles out.
